How to get the golden hour look

  • Shoot with the sun low and behind or beside you for a soft glow.
  • Keep the expression relaxed — golden light does the rest.
  • Warm, solid-coloured clothing complements the tones.

Take a golden hour photo yourself

  1. Check the time. Golden hour is roughly the hour after sunrise and before sunset; a weather app's sunset time tells you when to start.
  2. Put the sun behind or beside you. Light from behind gives a warm edge; turn slightly towards it so your face isn't in shadow.
  3. Expose for your face. Tap your face on the phone screen before shooting so the sky doesn't turn you into a silhouette.
  4. Take a burst. The light changes by the minute, so shoot plenty and choose later.

What to avoid

  • Squinting into the sun. Face away from it and let it light your hair and shoulders instead.
  • Heavy orange filters. The light is already warm; extra filters make skin look unnatural.
  • Leaving it too late. Once the sun drops below buildings or trees, the glow goes flat.

Golden hour photos — FAQ

When is golden hour?

Roughly the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. The exact window depends on where you are and the time of year, so check the local sunset time.

Should a golden-hour photo be my first photo?

It can be, if your face is clear and well lit. If the glow hides your features, use it as a second or third photo instead.
